Social Dress San Francisco

Social Dress at The LAB Gallery in San Francisco, 2006
Latex with pigment, peeled off paint, hole in the wall, and mirror
Dimensions variable

The LAB Gallery building, originally built as The Labor Temple in 1914, is a registered historic building. However much of the original ornamentation within the gallery is hidden by an aged drop ceiling and drywall walls. I made a latex cast of an ornamented molding, found behind the gallery walls, then installed the cast latex in the gallery and made a hole through the wall with a mirror revealing the site from which the piece was created. The hole itself, carved by hand, exposes the various layers of paint accumulated from exhibition after exhibition within the gallery.
