Social Dress San FranciscoSocial Dress at The LAB Gallery in San Francisco, 2006 The LAB Gallery building, originally built as The Labor Temple in 1914, is a registered historic building. However much of the original ornamentation within the gallery is hidden by an aged drop ceiling and drywall walls. I made a latex cast of an ornamented molding, found behind the gallery walls, then installed the cast latex in the gallery and made a hole through the wall with a mirror revealing the site from which the piece was created. The hole itself, carved by hand, exposes the various layers of paint accumulated from exhibition after exhibition within the gallery. | Social Dress at The Lab Gallery in San Francisco (installation view) | Social Dress at The Lab Gallery in San Francisco (installation view) | Social Dress at The Lab Gallery in San Francisco (detail of peekhole) | Social Dress at The Lab Gallery in San Francisco (detail through peekhole) |
